Health and Safety

GrainCorp holds safety as one of its highest values and is committed to achieving best practice safety performance.

GrainCorp has a health and safety strategy that is based on improvements in three key areas.

  • Safe plant and equipment
  • Safe systems of work
  • Safe employee behaviours

For 2008, GrainCorp will focus on effective risk management – the identification and reduction of risks using the hierarchy of controls.

Strategies will be implemented to reduce GrainCorp’s top 3 Corporate risks whilst each region/terminal/port will be focused on risk reduction action plans for their five highest risks.

GrainCorp believes that safety must be led from the top. All Executive, Divisional and Regional Managers will conduct regular site safety audits in 2007/2008, focused on encouraging and improving safe behaviours.

This initiative provides the opportunity for managers to demonstrate strong safety leadership which will, in turn, result in a best practice safety culture.

The GrainCorp Managing Director chairs a quarterly OHS Steering Committee. Members of this committee include Business Unit managers, country terminal representatives and the corporate safety team.

The charter of the committee is:

  • To review GrainCorp’s safety performance
  • Develop corporate strategies to achieve safety goals
  • Review the corporate strategies for effectiveness
  • Review issues unable to be resolved at Divisional/Business Unit level

GrainCorp recognises that best practice can only be achieved through continuously reviewing and improving its strategies.

The GrainCorp “safety journey” is well on schedule and is providing employees, visitors and contractors a safe and healthy work environment in which they can go home from work in the safe condition in which they arrived.
