GrainCorp grants $450,000 to community groups in 2024
September 19, 2024

The GrainCorp Community Foundation has supported 55 community groups in Australia and New Zealand throughout 2024, making it the largest funding year to date.

The grants are awarded in March and September each year and are set to provide the communities with support to revitalise important community spaces, sporting clubs and education initiatives.

In this latest round, 29 community groups were chosen to join the 26 awarded earlier in the year, making 2024 the most impactful since the Foundation relaunched in 2021.

“Our grants program is about making a real difference in our communities by giving volunteer-led groups the boost they need to continue their important work,” says GrainCorp’s Community Engagement Manager, Kyle Docherty.

“This funding recognises and supports the tremendous efforts of these groups to keep their communities thriving, and we look forward to seeing their projects come to life.”

Preserving the Yurrandaali Dreamtime story

The Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council in Caroona, NSW, will use the funding to create an interactive animation to be shown in schools and community centres, that preserves and shares the cultural heritage of the Gamilaroi people.

The Dreamtime story of Yurrandaali, which holds immense spiritual and cultural significance, will be brought to life through modern animation techniques, to ensure it is preserved and accessible for future generations.

The Council’s CEO Jason Allen says storytelling through animation is a powerful educational tool.

“The program is a vital cultural project for the Gamilaroi people, and GrainCorp’s generous support will help ensure that this sacred story is preserved and shared for generations to come,” says Jason.

“By bringing the Yurrandaali story to life through animation, we not only safeguard our heritage but also promote cultural understanding and reconciliation across the broader community.”

Supporting Aussie farmers through mental health services

Since it was founded in 2014, Farm Angels (formerly known as Drought Angels) has provided crucial support to nearly 5,000 farmers and over 1,300 communities grappling with severe drought conditions in Australia.

Farm Angels will use the recent grant awarded by GrainCorp to expand its Angels on the Phone project, which offers personalised phone support from mental health first aid-trained support workers, who have a background in farming or rural life.

“These tailored conversations have proven effective in improving mental health and resilience among farmers, helping them manage the multifaceted challenges posed by natural disasters and other pressures,” says Farm Angels Head of Operations, Jenny Gailey.

“GrainCorp’s support allows us to maintain and expand our services, ensuring more farmers receive the emotional support and practical guidance they need to overcome the financial, environmental, and personal stressors affecting their lives.”
