Burren Junction prepares for a bunkers harvest
November 07, 2024

With the 24-25 harvest hitting full strides, GrainCorp’s team at the Burren Junction site in northern New South Wales are keen to stretch the legs of their new and improved site.

The site has undergone a $5 million development to upgrade safety, efficiency, and capacity of operations ahead of what’s expected to be a busy harvest.

The project has expanded storage onsite, with four new bunkers added and an extension of the existing bunker, increasing capacity by 100,000 tonnes. This will allow the site to better handle large volumes, providing local growers with the necessary space to store their goods securely.

More space usually equals more visitors, so the upgrade also included the construction of a new truck marshalling yard, that can accommodate up to 54 road trains.

This new area will help alleviate traffic congestion on the Kamilaroi Highway, ensuring safer conditions for both truck drivers and the local community.

GrainCorp Project Manager Stan Gaynor says the overall site experience will be much improved.

“This initiative will not only streamline operations for truck drivers but also enhance the overall customer experience by reducing wait times,” says Stan.

“With the new marshalling yard, new additional sample stand, and two new additional weighbridges, we’re committed to easing bottlenecks and improving efficiency,” Stan says.

To support these upgrades, existing infrastructure is also being improved, including enhancements to amenities for the site teams and truck drivers. New power connections and upgrades to the site’s entry intersection are also underway to further support smooth operations.

GrainCorp Area Manager Scott Holland noted the exceptional condition of the crops this season, making the upgrades perfectly timed for harvest.

“The crops are looking spectacular and we’re expecting a longer harvest period, so the increased storage capacity will be a game changer for growers in the Burren area,” Scott explains.
